How To Know Which Food Affects You

It’s not uncommon to find a food that disagrees with your digestive tract. But, there are ways to decipher which foods are causing the problem and deal with them.

It would be so much easier if there was a medical test to cure all of our ills. Then, we could move right on to treatment and getting better. It works that way in many circumstances but not all.

Take food sensitivities, for instance.

Symptoms of the condition have been defined: diarrhea, vomiting, headache, nausea and pain, to name a few. But, these symptoms are common to other conditions and are often overlooked concerning a problem with food.

Sensitivity symptoms can show up days after eating the offending food. Now, you have a delay that might not even make the connection in your brain that a certain food is to blame. If you don’t make the connection, the doctor may not either.

There is no immune response associated with food sensitivities. Therefore, after the food has made its way painfully through your system to elimination the symptoms stop. The only way they continue is if you eat this food regularly. Once the pain goes away you often forget about it.

Testing for Food Sensitivity

This process is more detective work and deduction than medical science. Certain companies like Sage Medical Laboratories say that they can perform a blood test to help determine your sensitivity to certain foods. It is called the Complement Antigen Test and can help discover levels of antigen reaction in the body.

It sounds technical. An easier method would be to visit your doctor and a dietician.

Before you go, keep a journal of your symptoms and what you eat for at least a week or two. This information can help your doctor determine what food or group of foods your body is sensitive to.

A dietician can be employed to help you develop a diet that is both rich in the nutrients that you need as well as deficient in the foods that have been shown to cause you distress.

If necessary, supplements can be taken to replace the needed nutrients you lose through elimination of the offending food. They can also revamp your diet to support proper digestive system health so that is not a factor in the symptoms you are experiencing. A stronger digestive tract is better able to keep the body as a whole in great shape.

Your regimen may call for eliminating and reintroducing foods. If more than one food is suspected as the culprit, eliminate all suspects and then reintroducing them one by one until symptoms return.

Avoid taking medication to mask the symptoms since you need them to manifest in order to discover the source.

Testing for food sensitivity involves identifying the symptoms and a process of elimination between you and your health professionals.
